The company places equal importance on independent R&D and R&D through strategic cooperation. In 2016 the proportion of independent R&D increased by a large margin. Meanwhile, GCL brought in major strategic partners in a bid to jointly promote the large-scale development of photovoltaic power plants.
GCL New Energy covers the entire range of PV market segments. It has participated in the Chinese government’s the Frontrunner Scheme and the PV Poverty Alleviation Program, as well as developing distributed and large scale PV power projects.
In the choice of markets on which to focus for development, a targeted development strategy is formulated based on the study of resource conditions and subsidy policies in different regions, as well as by taking into account hours of natural daylight and power curtailment.

Frontrunner Projects
GCL New Energy has been an active participant in the Frontrunner Program and has won bids for 5 ‘Frontrunner’ projects, including Yangquan, Ruicheng, Jining, Lianghuai and Wuhai, with a total capacity of 360MW, ranking 3rd in China.
Among these projects, Ruicheng Xiexin 100MW PV Frontrunner Project was connected to the grid in September, 2017, becoming the first one of the second batch of 8 Frontrunner Bases in the country. Ruicheng Xiexin aggregates 11 advanced technologies, as well as regional intelligent operation management mode.
PV Poverty Alleviation Projects
Meanwhile, GCL New Energy is active in PV poverty alleviation business. GCL New Energy has built and acquired the largest index capacity 1170MW of PV poverty alleviation power plants that will be completed before June 30th 2018. This poverty alleviation can be accumulated to support 37935 families and the fund will be promised as 2 billion within 20 years.
Distributed Projects
GCL New Energy is keeping up with PV industry trends by actively expanding its distributed PV project development capabilities. GCL has built rooftop projects on public facilities, industrial, and agricultural buildings. In order to develop residential rooftop PV at scale, the company also focuses on new home construction projects in rural villages, urban expansion projects and PV poverty alleviation projects.
Ordinary Projects
GCL New Energy independently develops all types of utility scale projects.. In order to develop projects that maximize economic benefits to the local communities and integrates as much as possible with the local environment, GCL considers solar irradiance, ecological conditions and existing economic activities. In Western China, GCL has built large scale ground-mounted power plants on land that was degraded by desertification. In Central and Eastern China, GCL is developing ‘PV plus’ power plants such as agriculture-solar, fishery-solar, and agriculture-solar complementary projects.
